Police were called to the passenger terminal about 7.30pm on Sunday following reports an elderly man was making threats about airport security inside the passenger terminal.
Police will allege he was aggressive to security staff and made certain threats including threatening to blow up the airport.
When officers arrived, police allege the 73-year-old made further threats in connection to aircraft safety.
The man, who was going through security screening at the airport at the time, was arrested.
He was taken to Tamworth Police Station and charged with threatening aviation security – a charge that carries a maximum of 50 penalty units in court, or $10,500.
Police said the man was due to board a plane before his arrest, but the flight was delayed by about 45 minutes, before it took off.
The man was granted conditional bail to front Tamworth Local Court next month.

Police have charged a man who allegedly made threats at Tamworth Regional Airport last night.
The 73-year-old man allegedly made the threats as he passed through a security checkpoint about 7.30pm Sunday.
Police from Oxley Local Area Command were notified and attended a short time later.
Officers will allege when they spoke with the man, he made further threats regarding aircraft safety.
He was taken to Tamworth Police Station and charged with threatening aviation security.
The man was granted conditional bail to appear before Tamworth Local Court on Monday, August 14.
