The 57-year-old Tamworth man was riding in a north-east direction with four other cyclists when he fell during the collision with a Ford Courier utility on the Rushes Creek Rd, on Sunday morning.

Police said the crash happened about 11km out of Manilla, shortly after 9.30am.

The cyclist suffered several injuries, including a dislocated hip and fractured knee.

He was assessed by paramedics at the scene and taken by ambulance to Manilla hospital initially, before being transported to Tamworth hospital.

Following specialist advice from doctors, he was flown to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle on Monday for surgery. 

Police said the 84-year-old driver of the utility was not injured and investigations into the cause of the accident were continuing.

“The circumstances of the crash are not clear and still under investigation,” a spokesperson said on Monday.

“Inquiries are continuing.”

SUNDAY: A CYCLIST remains in hospital after coming into contact with a car on Sunday.

A NSW Ambulance spokesman told The Leader paramedics responded to reports of a collision between a vehicle and a person on Rushes Creek Road near Manilla shortly before midday Sunday.

The male, believed to be aged in his 40s, was transported to Manilla Base Hospital. Police confirmed on Sunday afternoon the injured person was a cyclist. The nature of his injuries are not yet known.
