Deb Maes and Megan Kwa will head to Noosa this weekend, where they will walk 30km for the Fred Hollows Foundation in the inaugural Sunshine Coastrek.
The two women will join more than 1600 trekkers, who will walk the stunning Sunshine Coastline in a bid to raise money for the cause.
What started as a personal fitness goal for the duo has turned into a mission to raise awareness and give hope to others.
“We needed a fitness goal and it was a good cause and it was just good fun,” Mrs Kwa said.
“We have been walking, walking and walking and going to the gym and doing some weights.”
The duo are part of the FabfitnFUN team with two other women from Sydney.
Mrs Kwa said most of track was sand and could prove a challenge for the two Tamworth women.
“80 per cent of the walk is on sand, there’s a couple of headlands but it’s mostly sand so hopefully it’s not too soft,” she said.
“In Tamworth we haven’t been able to train on the sand so we might find it a bit challenging.”
Deb Maes said she enjoyed the challenge of preparing for the big event.
“I’m excited, I feel challenged and a bit nervous but we have put our head down to do our training,” she said.
“So it’s nice to be able to achieve a personal challenge and help so many people too. Sight is so important, when we think about what it’s like and the things that we wouldn’t be able to do without sight.
“To be able to give that to more than 80 people, that’s exciting.”
She’s been busy walking tracks around the area and convincing others to join her on her fitness journey.
“We found a few tracks in the area that are off the highway measured between 10km and then building up to 15km and then 20km and just walking them on the weekend,” she said.
“What’s been good is we’ve been able to call on other people to get a bit fit too.”
