Wests serves up about 25,000 meals in Tamworth every year, across its venues, and a bold move will trim 250 kilos of saturated fat from their dishes.
The group has signed up to the “healthier oils program” switching to a healthier vegetable oil blend.
Wests chief food and beverage officer, Peter Carlyle, said the oil-change would save the company about $2500 to $3000 a year.
The group made the switch in May and Mr Carlyle said there’s been no feedback about any change in taste.
Local Heart Foundation officer Penny Milson approached Wests with the idea earlier and hoped more venues in town would go down the same path.
“A lot of people love hot chips and it doesn’t require the customer to change, the onus is on the managers of these venues,” Ms Milson said.
The Heart Foundation recommends a limit on cooking oils of less than 20 per cent saturated fats and less than one per cent trans fats.
