In a sale on Wednesday run by auctioneer Paul Dooley, 29 bulls made a total of $275,000.
They sold for an average of $9500 – the top price was $15,000 and four brought in $14,000 each.
Mr Paterson said that while he “didn’t say anything” beforehand, he was “hoping to do alright”.
“I’m very happy with the sale; it was above expectations,” he said.
Mr Paterson is a stock and station agent of more than 20 years, runs the Century 21 Paterson real estate agency, and started his stud in 2011.
“We had the country and had commercial cattle, and my passion was for stud cattle,” he said.
The sale had 48 registered bidders and almost double that in spectators.
Chris and Natalie Paterson run about 85 stud cows on 340ha (840a) and also do embryo transfer work.
“Stud-wise, we’ll probably have 40 bulls next year, so we’ll work towards that now.
“They’re coming along nicely.”
Mr Paterson said one of the major keys to Heart Angus’s success was Graeme ‘Dubby’ Doubleday, a “great fellow” who’s worked for him for more than two decades.
