As the Tamworth Hats Off To Country Music Festival prepares to get underway, Nicholson is preparing to release his new album Love and Blood on July 28.
He will perform at the Songwriters at the Dag Showcase on Saturday, July 8 and Sunday, July 9.
He will join accomplished artists Kevin Bennett, Aleyce Simmonds, Luke O’Shea, Felicity Urquhart on stage between 11am until 2.30pm.
“I’m looking forward to it, I don’t get to come to Tamworth very often outside of (January) festival time,” Nicholson said.
“It’s always kind of nice to be there at a different time of year and it’s certainly not so hot and it’s also a good chance to catch up with people.
“I’ll be spending a lot of time at The Dag (Sheep Station) I love being out there with John Krsulja and everyone, it is my first time at the song writers retreat.”
Nicholson is no stranger to retreating from the world to write his songs.
He said his song writing for his most recent album was in an area of the Hawksbury River that was only accessible by boat.
“No phones worked there,” he said.
“I had to find somewhere to go and isolate myself for awhile.
“I find that’s how I work now, I need to be in a place where I’m completely isolated from everyone else and no fear of the accidental drop in from someone – I was completely cut off and really enjoying it.
“It gives you a chance to ruminate and be contemplative of the things that have happened to you over time and to pull together all the songs I’ve been collecting in my back pocket over the last few years, I’m still a bit old school and write things down in a notebook.”
Nicholson said the he was looking forward to sharing the Nundle experience with other artists.
It was even more poignant given the importance of the area to late country artist and friend, Karl Broadie.
“I’m really looking forward to go back,” he said.
“I’ve never been to the retreat but Karl was so passionate for us to get involved.
“It’s always going to be a special place and a whole lot of cool artists are performing there, it’s going to be awesome and there will be a lot of love there too for Karl.
“There are a whole lot of cool people in Nundle, it’s a beautiful and nice place to go and visit.
“It will be nice to get out of the studio for a week, I’m looking forward to a change of scenery and seeing some of the outside world.”
