The emergency unfolded out the front of the Gunnedah Police Station in Abbott St on Sunday night.
Police said a 37-year-old Gunnedah man was observed on CCTV cameras outside the station about 5.35pm carrying a 20-litre plastic jerry can.
Officers claim the man poured the contents of the fuel in the can over his head and body, about 5.35pm.
A police spokesperson said officers responded immediately and found the 37-year-old holding a cigarette lighter.
He said the man was in a distressed state and spoke with officers who attempted to calm the situation.
“Police were able to convince the gentleman to drop the lighter and he was showered after being calmed,” the spokesperson said.
“He was conveyed to hospital for treatment.” Fire crews were also alerted and mopped up the spill.
No charges will be laid over the incident, police said.
