The major stakeholder Cricket NSW made the decision to wipe both competitions and informed Country Cricket Committee of Management at the quarterly meeting held in Sydney on June 5.
It’s not all doom and gloom, though, with the funds previously used to run the two competitions now to be people on the ground in regional NSW.
Where the money will go exactly is still to be confirmed but CEO of Cricket NSW Andrew Jones said the funds would be used “to provide a greater network of coaches in regional areas”.
Tamworth enjoyed a strong run in the Country Cup which resulted in titles in 2008/09 and 2010/11 while Tamworth also made the final last season.
Tamworth District Cricket Association president Ben Middlebrook said the axing was “a bit disappointing” and wasn’t sure if the association would look to fill the void with other representative fixtures.
“It really just depends...at the moment our hands are tied up with Tamworth Council. We’re seeing what the outcome is from that and then we’ll go from there,” Middlebrook said.
