Deputy Premier and Minister for Skills John Barilaro announced Tamworth was a pilot council for the $5 million skills program creating more apprenticeships and traineeships in local government.
Mr Barilaro said councils are often the biggest employers in the regional areas and the skills program would combat unemployment while addressing the state’s skills shortage.
“We’re looking for councils that want to be part of creating the workforce for the future,” Mr Barilaro said.
“We know we’ve got a skills shortages in this state.”
Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson said the government needs to continually look at getting more people into jobs.
“If we can look at partnering with councils who are the biggest employers in most instances across regional NSW, provide these opportunities, then I think we will look at lowering unemployment rates and up-skilling local work-forces,” Mr Anderson said.
