Fred Tuffs died in John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle from severe head injuries after he was allegedly attacked at a construction site off Culgoora Rd at Wee Waa on Tuesday afternoon.
Patrick Allen Boon has been refused bail charged with murdering the 57-year-old.
Strike Force Magna detectives continued to follow lines on inquiry on Thursday, including examining the motive behind the alleged attack.
A sledgehammer and wrench – the weapons allegedly used to attack Mr Tuffs – have been seized and will also undergo forensic examination.
Boon will remain in custody until the case returns to Moree court in August.
The pair both were contract concrete workers for Boodles Concrete – a Queensland-based company.
The pair were working on the Richard Crookes-operated site that is building the new $41 million Cotton Seed Distributors centre, on the outskirts of Wee Waa.
Tributes continue to flow for Mr Tuffs who has been described as a “lovely man”, “top bloke” and a friend to many who will be sorely missed.
