In fact the smile got broader after he drove two winners, the first coming behind the Tony Missen trained For Me in the Become A Tamworth HRC Member Pace.
“The main thing was for him not to gallop and that is what went our way,” Ison said.
At only his sixth race start for the Missen stables the For A Reason gelding produced a whopping 29.6m win over Misty Jane (Julie Weidemann) with Bassey (Sam Ison) another 3.8m away third.
“He can run when he puts his mind to it,” Ison said.
“It was beautiful,” Missen added “he has finally put it all together”
“Tom gave us a perfect drive – I left it all up to him.”
While stablemate Rubbers Dilemma (Paul Grima) utilised the two barrier out of the gate to gain the lead, Ison found himself sitting second last with For Me before taking a three wide trail up into the race. Up the back straight Ison was on his way with For Me and left the field to sort out the minor placings.
With rain falling Ison then stepped out in the following race – the TAB.COM.AU Pace with Fear No Evil, who is raced and trained by his father Andy.
“He can run the gate this little fella,” Ison said, with Fear No Evil taking the lead and dictating the race terms for the entire 1609m journey.
“He has won a couple of races in the wet,” he commented before declaring he was heading back to the stables for a “jumper”.
Stacey Weidemann also notched up a winning double, firstly for her own stables with an all the way 4.6m win with Dontbefoolish in the JJ’s Kebabs & Pizza Pace.
“He has been unlucky in his runs but he has been going alright,” Weidemann said.
She then put local pacer Penny A Packet (Russell Murray) into the limelight with a win in the Next Meeting- The Winter Warmer Pace.
“She is a front runner and when she got to the front she was always going to be a bit of a show,” Weidemann said.
“Russell had the little horse spot on - he does a good job so thanks for the drive.”
Lola Weidemann also had a good night at the “office”, training the winners of the first three races and taking the reins behind two of them.
First up for the stables was Hero Bromac, who produced a half a neck over stablemate Rocknroll Annie (Julie Weidemann) in the opening race. The following race Conversion held on for a head win over Itsnewstome (Tom Ison) and Yes Brother Yes (Danny Gatt-Bouquet) in a very tight finish.
Don’tbefoolish then rounded off the treble.
