Purse battled cold, windy conditions at the Gunnedah Golf Club to secure her second crown on Wednesday after first winning the title on her home track back in 2014.
The golfing wunderkind’s form in the lead-up wasn’t the greatest but everything fell into place at the tournament.
“That’s probably the best I’ve played in a while,” Purse said.
After a first round of 79, Purse was happy with her first 18 holes.
“I was pretty pleased with how I played, everything was coming together,” she said.
The 17-year-old was on her way to lowering her first round score before a double bogey late in the day saw Purse shoot another 79.
The late stumble didn’t matter, she still blew her opponents off the course with Mary Anne Macklinshaw the next best 12 shots adrift of Purse.
The dominant victory came despite the course not playing to her strengths.
“It’s really short [Gunnedah] and I hit a long ball – I much prefer playing longer courses,” Purse said.
With Purse having won the title previously, NNWDLGA honorary secretary Di Boulton wasn’t shocked by the junior’s win.
“I wasn’t, Breanna has won it before, the last time, about three or four years ago in Moree, she scooped the pool,” Boulton said.
“That was a really good win [at Gunnedah], she’s only young and has come through the junior ranks in Moree.”
The final day of the three-day tournament saw a tense foursomes championship fought out with a playoff needed to crown a victor.
“There was a three-hole playoff to decide the winners after both teams had 91 off the stick,” Boulton said.
“It was only on the last hole that Kim Scott and Mary Anne Macklinshaw won it – it was on the green of the third playoff hole.”
The numbers were down at this year’s tournament with roughly 103 golfers teeing off on Tuesday.
Despite the lack of numbers, Boulton said the tournament was a success.
“It was a very enjoyable time, even thought the numbers weren’t as big as normal,” Boulton said.’
“Everyone had a lovely time playing and at the presentation dinner as well.”
