“It was a tale of two halves,” Souths coach Andrew Davy said.
He was “very happy with the way things were going” at 0-all at half-time.
“We played very well in the first half,” he said.
“We got our press right, we outletted well and we created some good opportunities.”
Unfortunately to no avail with Flames keeper Tracy Freeman keeping them out. She pulled off some strong saves. Flames also scrambled well in defence, he said.
“(At half-time) I asked them to improve in a couple of areas,” Davy said.
One was be a bit more creative inside the 25 going into the circle. He also thought towards the end of the first half they started to go a bit long, and wanted them to shorten things up.
But Flames came out in the second half and quickly asserted their authority.
“For probably the first 10-15 minutes in the second half we could not get the ball out of our half,” Davy said.
“They stepped it up too. They were very strong on the ball.”
Flames started winning the contests and went 2-nil up. Steph Cadby dragged a goal back with a nice deflection, but Flames restored their two-goal advantage not long after.
“It was certainly good for our young players to come up against a side that plays so strong on the ball,” Davy said.
He said Mia Emmannuel was strong in goal. Alison Billinghurst also played well in deep defence while Britt Parker did a good job on Kimmy Resch in the first half.
