He'll proudly display it when the Giants play West Coast in Perth on Sunday, wearing a crafted Indigenous jersey with the rest of his teammates, and a custom-designed pair of boots that represent the love he has for his family.

Yet he's not quite ready to delve into his Aboriginal roots. Wilson's father is Aboriginal, but he's never met him and at this stage of his life has no intention to.

So he has a lot of unanswered questions about his paternal Indigenous heritage, questions which could well remain unanswered forever.

"My girlfriend always says, 'I want to meet your dad so I can see the features and where you get this from and that from', but I just keep saying I don't know if I should," Wilson says.

"Maybe later on in life if I'm a bit older and mature, if he's still around then maybe. Since I'm playing AFL I think I'll just leave that on the side."

Wilson hails from Mandurah, south of Perth, and has always been incredibly close to his mother, Katrina, and full sisters Lou and Tara. They were three of seven children raised by Katrina, a woman Wilson simply describes as "incredibly strong".

Up to 40 members of Wilson's family will be in the crowd at Domain Stadium on Sunday for a rare glimpse of the Giants defender who has been one of the club's most consistent performers this season.

Family means everything to Wilson, which is evident in the tattoos he has colourfully emblazoned across his chiselled frame.

Part of the design on his left arm was inked in memory of his nan after she passed away. Behind his ear is a small tribute to his pop, who passed away a few years ago while Wilson was in Noosa.

But it's back on Wilson's left arm where a tight sketch of two hands marking a football is possibly the most powerful image on his canvassed body.

That tattoo symbolises another reason why Indigenous round means so much to him.

It's in honour of his close childhood friend Rowan Davis, who was stabbed to death in January 2011, aged 17, just months after Wilson had moved to Sydney from Western Australia as an under-age selection for the Giants.

"I've got some stuff [tattoos] for my Indigenous mate who passed away," Wilson recalls. "I used to play footy with him, since we were very young, probably six and all the way through to Peel Thunder and when I got drafted.

"He died in a bit of a fight with someone and got stabbed. I wasn't well. I went home for about two to three weeks. The club were great, [they said] just go home and get your head space right and come back when you're ready.

"Everyone has to die at some stage. To put them on my body is pretty special and something that I'll probably do for the rest of my life."

Such is Wilson's passion for tattoos, he owns two shops in Bali with his stepfather.

He caught the inking bug soon after moving to Sydney with fellow early Giant Gerald Ugle. The pair became well acquainted with the owner of Bondi Inc and soon enough Wilson's left arm was transformed into an artistic mosaic.

His stepfather is Indonesian, which allows him to buy property in Bali, and Wilson jumped at the opportunity to enter the tattoo business, although he says becoming an artist one day would be a bridge too far.

"I don't reckon I could bloody draw a dog to be honest, or a stick man," Wilson says. "I'm no good, I let them do it, that's what they do. I just stick to kicking footies.

"He [Wilson's step dad] got into it about five or six years ago. I liked tattoos so I thought if I can get into it I might as well make the opportunity.

"The artists over there are incredible, they've won some Bali competitions and he went to Singapore not long ago and won that. I think he's going to come to Australia and hopefully do well in that.

"It's just a little hobby: go over there in the off-season and relax and get tattoos and take my mind off football."

Wilson's latest tattoo on his right forearm was done at one of his Bali tattoo shops. Indigenous teammate Zac Williams also received a tattoo from one of Wilson's parlours.

But any future plans to fill in the blank skin that remains on his upper right arm have been put on hold for the moment as GWS look to build on consecutive come-from-behind wins against Collingwood and Richmond.

It was Wilson's uncanny long kicking that allowed the Giants to get out of jail in both games. Against the Magpies he drilled a long bomb from the centre square deep into the forward line, allowing Steve Johnson to kick a late winner, while last week his booming kick in against the Tigers set up Jeremy Cameron's late heroics.

"I don't know why I can kick the ball so long," he says. "I used to sleep with a footy when I was young, I don't know if that helped.

"I used to live a two-minute walk from the oval. Every day after school I'd go down with all the boys and kick the ball all the time so that could have something to do with it."
