But in Thursday’s play-off for 11th and 12th spots, it was North West’s turn to dispense the punishment in the 12-team tournament, handing West Darling an 11-0 soccer lesson.
North West manager Michael Lord, of Armidale High School, said the side enjoyed having more time on the ball against West Darling than what the Sydney sides afforded them.
“The opposition wasn’t as strong today (Thursday) as has been in the past,” he said. “Against the Sydney sides you don’t get as much time on the ball.
“Today we got more time on the ball and that allowed us to show our skills and pass the ball around a bit more and create a few opportunities.”
On day one of the championships on Tuesday, Sydney North and Western beat North West 8-0 and 6-0.
The following day Sydney South West Green beat North West 6-0 and South Coast defeated them 11-0.
In the final on Thursday, Sydney West downed Sydney South West Green 2-1.
Lord said he expected the team to struggle against the Sydney outfits.
He said North West keeper Adam See and midfielder Luke McVey were his best players.
At the state secondary schools hockey championships in Tamworth on Thursday, North West finished in eighth spot after Sydney East beat them 1-0. Hunter beat South Coast 4-2 in the final.
