It’s truly heartening to see there’s been such a response in the community to an event like the Biggest Morning Tea.

Now in it’s 24th year groups all over town are doing their bit to raise money for the Cancer Council, by enjoying a cuppa and a break.
At Somerton during the week, there was an absolute groundswell of support.
For 17 years now the locals have been coming together in support – and this time around the event raised in excess of $4,400 for the cause.
Now that’s one small community with a very big heart. But they were by no means alone in their efforts.
Local businesses donated some of the edible goodies and prizes for raffles; so it was definitely a whole of community affair.
An effort being replicated across the nation. And here’s why;
One in two Australians will be diagnosed with cancer by the time they’re 85.
Today, there are more than 1.1 million Australians who are either living with cancer, or who have survived a diagnosis.
That’s a diagnosis every five minutes – just about how long it takes for the average tea break.
Prostate cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in Australia and the third most common cause of cancer death.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in Australia and the second most common cancer to cause death in women, after lung cancer.
Everyone knows someone affected by cancer – so it certainly stacks up as a worthy cause.
The money raised through events like the one held at Somerton during the week, will help to fund the Cancer Council’s vital research, prevention and support service programs, including the 13 11 20 hotline and financial assistance to those in need.
And it’s not just the patients but their families who receive support, because a diagnosis has far reaching implications.
In 2015, research grants through the Cancer Council totalled more than $70.5 million. But it would not be possible without each and every one of you.
So if you enjoy a cuppa and have a bit of a sweet tooth – why not host a morning tea in aid of the Cancer Council – because every cent counts in the battle to beat this insidious disease.
To those of you that already have – thank you.
