Both teams took a little time to get the feel for the court with a lot of passing between the girls before Calrossy’s No 5 Amelia Simm grabbed the opportunity to put first points on the board for the Rockets.
Her teammate No 11 Annabel Dalzell followed shortly after with another well placed two pointer.
The Calrossy team are made up from Years 5 and 6 and the girls have been playing together in various team competitions for three years, the Year 6 for four years.
This was evident by the easy comradery shown on the court and off.
Their parental cheer squad are very pleased with the attitude of fun and sportsmanship that the young ladies demonstrate every week.
West Tamworth took a little longer to find their feet but had their first shot at the ring when No 9 Dionne McCubbin was fouled.
She made a couple of valiant attempts that both grazed the target only to fall short at the last.
It is great to see West Tamworth Primary School enter a girls’ team and a boys’ team in the Primary Comp this season.
This could be due to the presence of Jono Willis who is a long-time coach, player and passionate supporter of Tamworth Basketball.
The girls’ team are made up from players in Years 3 through to 6 and if that isn’t enough of a stretch, some of the young players have followed coach Willis from Manilla.
The girls from West Tamworth weren’t able to convert their attempts into points but they did not give up. They showed a lot of heart and displayed sportsmanship that was well beyond their years.
Calrossy’s score kept sky rocketing with points added onto the scoreboard by No 10 Ruby Dalitz, No 12 Eliza Kearney and No 20 Hannah Hurley.
No 5 Simm and No 11 Dalzell didn’t rest on their laurels and also added more points for their team to see Calrossy finish 22-0. The game tonight had Nathaniel McGrath as a referee on court 3 and Lily Darcy right beside refereeing on court 4.
This is significant as they are the Junior Club Captains for Tamworth Thunderbolts and are a vital link between the younger and older members of the basketball family.
Both Lily and Nathaniel are accomplished sportspersons and donate large chunks of time assisting wherever they are required.
It was good to see the Thunderbolts Men come away with a win on Saturday night after a nail biting finish! The Thunderbolt Women didn’t get the win in their game, but there’s always next time.
