STEWART Bayliss might have bowed out in the semi finals of the Central Northern District Bowling Association State Pairs at his home South Tamworth Bowling Club last weekend but it didn’t stop him from taking a narrow lead in the Bob Fowler CNDBA Bowler Of The Year Award.

Bayliss and co-South Tamworth club member David Russell were beaten 27-10 by father and son combination Mark and Nic Golledge in an all-South Tamworth semi final last Saturday.
The Golledges were then beaten 20-19 in a thrilling final by West Tamworth pair Dave Shorten and Grahame Hall.
The winners had not played in the previous BOTYA events (State Fours and Triples) and harvested 70 points in the prestigious BOTYA won by Kim Greentree last year, following on from Chris Herden and Nic Golledge.
However Bayliss accrued 40 points from the State Pairs (20 for participation and 20 for finishing third) to now sit on 130 points.
It gives him a 20-point over from Mark and Nic Golledge as well as North Tamworth pair Graeme Pennell and Luke Russell, who had won the CNDBA State Triples with clubmate Damien Thom.
North Tamworth’s Chris Collins (100) is next followed by defending BOTY, Greentree, who is on 90 points with clubmate Mick Tarbert, who was part of the winning State Fours team with Greentree, Bayliss and Graeme Nicholls. Damien Thom and Dick Russell also sit on 90 points in a BOTYA table that still has CNDBA State Senior Pairs and Reserve pairs to be decided.
The State Reserve Pairs has reached the semi final stage while one of the State Senior Pairs semi finals has been played and won. Jeff Myers and Steve Graham defeated South Tamworth clubmates Paul Latham and Laurie Assef 29-6 last weekend with the other semi final between Dick Spinks/Greentree and Tamworth City’s Geoff Carthew/Cec Wales to be played.
This weekend all attention turns to Tamworth City where the TCBC stages a “Turning The Lights On” Triples Carnival, said CNDBA secretary/treasurer Peter Kachel.
It starts 4pm on Saturday.
