The 12-year-old student has taken out one of Australia’s most prestigious writing prizes, named the primary school winner of the Henry Lawson Festival’s verse and short story competition.
I couldn’t believe it when they told me.

Neve admitted she was shocked when she was told she had won the class five division for her piece, Helpless.
“I couldn’t believe it when they told me,” she said.
It was one of two poems she wrote, based on a recent visit to Vietnam with family.
“We used that for inspiration, and being able to see it with my own eyes, firsthand, it definitely made me look at things differently,” she said.

“I wouldn’t say it was difficult to write, it was just something that came to me after that experience I had overseas.”
The competition attracted close to 400 entries from across Australia and Neve will be presented with her award at an official ceremony next month.
Fellow Ben Venue student Ellesse Peltonen was also commended by judges for her piece, Poverty.
