During their home game against Walcha, the Magpies held an auction and took around buckets to lend a helping hand to former half-back Rodney Wilson as he battles throat cancer.
“Roland” as he was better known played for the Magpies during the mid 70s.
“He was a roly poly half-back,” former team-mate Bill Feggans recalled.
“He had no side-step. He just went straight.”
Wilson also played with Walcha before joining the Magpies, injuries curtailing his playing days.
Feggans coordinated the fundraiser, which raised almost $2000. One of the hot-ticket items was a pink striped Tamworth ladies jersey signed by the Aussie women’s sevens team, which will be donated to Wilson family.
The money raised will go towards helping out with covering the associated expenses of the medical treatment Wilson requires such as travel and accommodation.
