That was the advice given by Peter and Marcia George, as the Tamworth residents celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Thursday.
While it is often cliched, there’s is truly a story of lasting love at first site.
A mutual acquaintance introduced the pair at a dance in Brewarrina. Shortly after Peter asked Marcia to the local picnic races, and the rest, as they say, is history.
“To be celebrating our 60th anniversary feels wonderful,” Mrs George said.
“It is a real achievement and we are proud of it.”
The couple wed in the Holy Trinity Church in Dubbo on April 27 1957, then honeymooned at Lord Howe Island before settling into life at their Wavehill sheep station in the Brewarrina district, where they had four children, Jenelle, Rodney, Nerida and Leanne.
In 1965 they moved into town for the children’s school needs, before also purchasing a property called Rumleigh, where Peter became the first property to grow a cotton crop in the district.
“We had some great times and some tough times out there – droughts, the dry, heat and floods,” Mr George said.
“But a business is like a marriage – you only get out what you put in, and we enjoyed it out there.”
In 1977 the George’s “sold up and shipped out” moving to Tamworth where they both held several jobs including owning the Acacia Motel before retiring in 1990 to spend more time with family and travel the world.
These days the couple reside at and love the Tamworth Gardens Retirement Village, where they are greeted by the hungry kookaburras on their back fence every morning, and enjoy visits from their children, 13 grandchildren, and 21 great grandchildren, with three more on the way this year.
“I am very happy and very proud,” Mrs George said.
“Peter is a wonderful husband that has always been there for me and always put me first.”
The happy couple are celebrating the milestone with an afternoon tea with the residents of the village, where they got over 100 replies to their open invitation, before hosting a family affair at the Kootingal Hotel on Saturday.
“Marriage is about understanding and cooperation, talk things through and enjoy each others company,” Mrs George said. That is what we have always done and that is what we will always do.”
