Dewayne Anthony James Nicholls is facing one count of recklessly causing grievous bodily harm after he was charged by detectives on Monday night.
Police allege the 18-year-old struck a 32-year-old male in the head with a brick and stomped on him on the ground during an altercation in Green St shortly before 1.30am on Sunday.
The 32-year-old suffered a fractured skull and was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle.
He remains in an induced coma in intensive care.
Police said on Tuesday he was listed in a serious condition.
Nicholls was refused bail by Tamworth police on Monday night and spent the night in custody before he appeared in an out-of-sessions bail hearing in Tamworth Local Court.
He lodged a fresh bid for bail which was granted by the court.
As part of his bail conditions, Nicholls’ has been ordered to remain under house arrest and has to report to police regularly.
He will front court in May.
Detectives have interviewed several people as part of the investigation into the alleged assault and said investigations were continuing.
