NEW ARRIVAL: One-week-old Gunnedah baby Oliver John Neilson brings the most popular name of 2016 into 2017.

The most popular baby names for 2016 have been revealed by the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages and one-week-old Oliver Neilson is bringing it into 2017.

Oliver was the most popular name for boys for the second year in a row, while Olivia took out the top spot for girls.

Oliver John Neilson was born at Gunnedah Hospital on April 11, 2017 to Matt and Melissa Neilson.

First-time-mum Melissa said she has dreamed of calling her child Oliver since she was a teen.

“It was a choice I made as a teenager, that if I ever had a boy, he would be called Oliver. I didn’t realise it was so popular,” Melissa said.

Oliver’s proud grandparents are Laraine and Kevin Finlay, of Sydney and Kristine and Peter Neilson, of Muswellbrook.
