The incident occurred as both vehicles were travelling to Porcupine Lookout about 11.30am on Saturday.
The man was travelling behind the off-duty officer before overtaking and stopping in the middle of the road.
He confronted the officer, accused him of travelling too slowly and is accused of punching the officer while they were seated in the car.
The offender was later arrested at a house in Gunnedah and charged with assault. He is due to appear at Gunnedah Local Court in June.
The officer was not injured.
Meanwhile, police are seeking information about an incident at The Plains Motel in Conadilly St on Sunday.
About 5.20pm, two youths aged about 15 years were riding scooters on private property when they were asked to leave by the owner.
Police said the young persons were verbally abusive and on leaving, one smashed a glass door with his scooter. They then left on a scooter and pushbike.
Both were wearing shorts, and one had a green-coloured singlet, the other a black-red t-shirt.
