The white Ford Ranger was parked in the carport of a Morilla St house in South Tamworth in the early hours of Monday.

The vehicle was stolen along with a purse, two sets of car keys and a 4L bottle of bourbon, while the occupants were asleep inside.

About 3am, police spotted the Ranger at the intersection of Warral Rd and Robert St, and tried to stop the car.

It took off, and police chased the ute through West and South Tamworth.

The pursuit continued for more than 10 minutes and reached speeds of up to 155km per hour along Manilla Rd before the chase was abandoned.

The Ranger continued on and was discovered in Moree, more than 250km from Tamworth, on Monday morning by a local resident.

The vehicle was dumped in Jones Ave and was seized by police for forensic examination. Investigations into the break-and-enter are continuing.

Meanwhile, a P-plate driver has lost his licence after he was clocked more than 50km over the limit near Tamworth.

About 1.10pm, officers were patrolling the Oxley Highway at Bective when they stopped a car travelling 152km per hour in a 100 zone.

The 17-year-old driver, who is a red P-plate holder, was slapped with a $2350 speeding infringement and also lost 12 demerit points.

He was also issued a $253 fine and lost two more demerit points for not displaying P-plates.

He has been suspended from driving for six months.

It comes just days after a red P-plate driver lost his licence for speeding in Oxley Vale.

The 17-year-old driver was stopped at 8am on Good Friday for travelling 20km per hour over the speed limit in the 80km zone on Manilla Rd.

He was handed a $265 fine and lost his licence on the spot because of double demerits.

Operation Tortoise and double demerits finish at midnight on Monday.
