The Department of Rural Health at the University of Newcastle’s Tamworth base will now be provide more specialist pathways for medical students looking to train and practice in the regional Australia.
As a regional training hub, director Jenny May said the department could allow students to complete up to 60 per cent of their specialist training in Tamworth.
The Tamworth hub was one of 26, named in an announcement by Assistant Health Minister David Gillespie, that will benefit from a $28.5 million federal investment.
“Supporting high quality regional and rural health training is an important way to address rural health workforce shortages,” Dr Gillespie said.
