The apprentice hoop’s father Jason advised Melanie has suffered bleeding on her brain which doctors at Gold Coast Hospital will monitor for 72 hours before deciding if surgery is required.
Melanie also suffered general bruising, and is able to open her eyes momentarily, but is being kept sedated.
Racing NSW doctor Dave Duckworth will liaise with doctors and monitor Melanie’s treatment.
Her parents Jason and Narelle remain by her bedside in hospital, as does boyfriend Jack McGrath.
Apprentice to Tamworth trainer Sue Grills, Melanie has ridden 13 winners in her career to date, highlighted by her Boggabri Cup triumph aboard Smart Bet in February.
Melanie was transported to the Gold Coast on Saturday night, not having regained consciousness following the fall, and was placed in an induced coma.
Melanie, who grew up in Picton, south of Sydney, has been apprenticed to Grills for a little more than two years.
The horrific race fall occurred in the downhill section of the Warialda track near the 400m mark, just before the home turn.
Popular North West jockey Darren Jones died as a result of injuries sustained in the fall.
The other jockey involved, Leanne Henry is likely to be discharged from Tamworth Hospital on Sunday.
Henry fractured her collarbone and is set to travel to Sydney for surgery.
