Tamworth Thunderbolts stretched their Waratah Basketball League men’s first division unbeaten record to five matches courtesy of a 78-70 win against Newcastle Hunters on Saturday night.
Justin Leehy and American import Kyle Gupton each scored 16 points for the Bolts, who led by one point at halftime and went on with the job in the second stanza.
Matt Monckton (12) and the evergreen Chris Skilton (11) also posted double-figures.
Tamworth’s record is now 5-0 and they sit second in the state standings.
A great result also for the Thunderbolts women’s team, which recorded its first win under American coach Brad Melton.
Tamworth dominated proceedings to record a 59-29 win on the road at Hawkesbury Jets.
GROUP 4 SECOND DIVISION
In the end, it was always going to be only a matter of time before Kootingal Moonbi got the better of Boggabri in Saturday’s Group 4 Second Division clash at Kootingal.
But perhaps it took longer than most people expected.
On a warm autumn day, the winless Roos travelled to undefeated Kootingal for the round four clash with only 13 players, and were beaten 54-24 after trailing 20-18 early in the second-half.
In other Group 4 Second Division games played on Saturday, Manilla defeated Uralla 24-14; Werris Creek downed Barraba 30-24; Walcha toppled Dungowan 46-22; and Bundarra beat Bingara 30-14.

AFL NORTH WEST
New England Nomads remain unbeaten through the opening two rounds after shaking off Tamworth Kangaroos by 35 points at Bellevue Oval on Saturday,
In a re-match of last year’s grand final, the Nomads led at every change for the 12.10 (82) to 7.5 (47) success.
Dave Richards and Ethan Karpany each booted four goals for the defending premiers, with Wulu Hall named as New England’s best.
The Roos were well-served by Brad Rees and new recruit Warwick Gilmour, who booted three goals in his debut appearance.
Eight goals from playing-coach Greg Piggott propelled Gunnedah to its first win of the season, a 93-point away defeat of Moree at Taylor Oval.
Piggott headlined a list of nine different goalkickers for the Bulldogs in the 20.11 (131) to 5.8 (38) victory.
Inverell kept its unbeaten record intact, steamrolling an undermanned Narrabri by 69 points.
The Saints join the Nomads in boasting 2-0 records.
PRIMARY SCHOOL GAMES
More than 1600 young athletes from South-East Queensland through to Canberra, and across NSW are in Tamworth this weekend for the third annual National Primary Games.
Aimed at students aged 9-12, 11 different sports are being contested including gymnastics, AFL, rugby league, rugby union, soccer, mountain biking, basketball, netball, tennis, hockey and water polo.
NEW ENGLAND RUGBY UNION
Round 3: St Albert’s College defeated Armidale Blues 34-22 and Robb recorded a thrilling 26-25 victory against Barbarians.
NORTHERN INLAND PREMIER LEAGUE
Oxley Vale Attunga dispatched Demon Knights in Armidale 4-1 with Luke Purcell hitting a brace for the high-flying Mushies.
Benn Gennardini and Brendan Fergie also got on the scoresheet for the defending champions.
Norths United meanwhile defeated South Armidale 3-1, while North Companions thrashed East Armidale 5-nil to make it two from two and Tamworth FC edged out Inverell Joey’s 2-1.
Beau Langenbaker and David Richardson found the back of the net for FC, who led 1-nil at half-time.
