Mini crime wave in Wee Waa
WEE Waa is going through a mini- crime wave, with the Barwon Local Area Command (LAC) warning everyone – residents and owners of commercial premises – to be on the lookout.
Barwon LAC crime manager, Detective Inspector Gavin Rattenbury, said on Monday theft from homes and motor vehicles was an increasing problem for police in Wee Waa.
He said five break-ins and five thefts had been reported to Wee Waa Police Station this month.
Thieves were keen to take advantage of any items left in sight, such as wallets, handbags, phones, and keys that might give them later access to homes and vehicles were extremely desirable at present, Det Insp Rattenbury said.
“Whilst the trend appears to be towards commercial premises in recent weeks this is not a time for local residents to be complacent,” he said.
“Whilst force was used in some events, thefts are often crimes of opportunity – and unlocked windows or doors give them this opportunity.”
He said residents should ensure homes, vehicles and businesses were always secured.
“Never leave keys or wallets in plain view during the day or at night – unfortunately, criminals are all too aware that most people are creatures of habit and leave their keys, wallets and handbags in the usual places, so make it harder by locking them away each night,” Det Insp Rattenbury said.
Police are engaged in a number of strategies to target offenders but needed public cooperation.
“Look out for your neighbours and be extra aware of what is happening in your area,” Det Insp Rattenbury said.
