Tamworth councillors indicated it was time stop being “lenient” when it came to Baiada’s waste.
A recently-revised agreement between council and Baiada required the chicken processor make “substantial progress toward waste compliance” by January 30, 2017.
Baiada has asked for an extension on its waste improvement plan period until May 30, which was approved at Tuesday night’s meeting.
“I have little inclination to be lenient,” Councillor Juanita Wilson said.
“Non-compliance is a serious issue and for such a big business and it shouldn’t be happening.”
Baiada has been paying an average of $4000 per week in non-compliance charges since July 2016.
If Baiada doesn’t achieve compliance by May 30, council will order a report from the company outlining what measures have been taken to improve.
