The Tamworth trainer prepared her first-ever treble on home soil thanks to Wanting You, Under The Thumb and Market Guru.
Market Guru sealed the deal when he surged to a narrow win in the Advanced Inland Security Benchmark 55 Handicap (1200m).
Jockey Matt McGuren produced a perfect ride to guide Market Guru ($4.80) home by nose from Gunnedah charge Dos Santos.
“My first treble here at Tamworth,” Grills confirmed with a wide grin post-race.
“It has been about 10 years since we moved in (from Somerton), we’ve had doubles before, but never a treble here.”
That Market Guru filled the final leg made it better for the astute trainer.
“He’s such a consistent horse,” she said.
“He’s no champion but never stops trying and that track suited him too.
“He’s been a terrific horse for his owners. They bought him for just $1000. He’s now won $93,750 in prizemoney. They’ve got a real kick out of him because he’s been so honest.”
Wanting You ($17) broke through at her sixth start when fighting off all her opposition in the Goodwin Kenny 3YO Maiden Handicap (1400m).
The daughter of Snippetson held off Cool Baby for a long-neck win.
“She really likes the wet tracks,” Grills said.
“The only two good races she’s run have been here and on wet tracks.”
Grills trains the three-year-old filly for Paul Frampton and recognised his great support over a number of years.
“He’s a fabulous client,” she said.
Under The Thumb ($11) made light of an early slip up to flash down the outside and win the Coreys Catering Class 2 Handicap (1000m).
Jockey Peter Graham told Sue Grills the four-year-old gelding’s back legs slipped from under him when they jumped.
In other results, Nobody became a racing somebody when he blitzed his opposition in the Tamworth City Toyota Maiden Handicap (1200m).
The Rod Northam charge was heavily supported from $2.60 into $1.60 and trotted in by a comfortable four lengths.
“I wish they were all as easy as that,” Northam said.
Newcastle trainer Steve Hodge believes Ticket To Riches might make a good staying prospect next preparation after she zoomed home from back in the field to win the Allsop Signs Maiden Plate (1600m).
Sadhika satisfied Greg Bennett on a number of fronts when she saluted in the Shay Brennan Constructions Fillies and Mares Benchmark 55 Handicap (1200m) in his final meeting as a trainer.
Bennett’s hopes of a double with favourite Taste Of Money were thwarted by Walcha’s George Woodward and bonny mare Sandy Waters in the FSDP Benchmark 65 Handicap (1600m).
Ti Tan Tiger ($2.50) sent favourite backers home happy with a surging win for Quirindi’s Geoff O’Brien in last, the Thread Effects Class 1 Handicap (1400m).
