Katrina Rekunow slotted the match-winner in a game that Waratahs coach Graeme McKenzie thought could have gone either way, or finished in a draw as it looked it might at 3-all with under 10 minutes remaining.
McKenzie said both sides played well for their first hit-out and was pleased with what he saw from his.
“We passed the ball around nicely and our skill level was okay considering it was our first game,” he said.
Leading at half-time, he changed a few things structurally but had to swap them back when Flames scored two unanswered goals.
Mel Courtney, Tayla King, Rekunow and sister Tahlia, Sarah Askey and Abigail Doolan all had strong games. McKenzie was also impressed with Bella Cameron.
“She was outstanding. For a young kid she has a really good hockey brain,” he said.
