The new league has certainly grabbed headlines right around the country and inspiring girls of all ages to take up the game.

Tamworth rivals Swans and Roos have come together for a special Come and Try Day, being held on Thursday.

Being staged from 5.30pm, the Come and Try Day is open to players of all ages and will finish with a barbecue.

“We’re holding this clinic for those girls and juniors who are keen to get involved in playing footy,” Tamworth Swans president Josh McKenzie said.

“There is no doubt the AFLW has opened people’s eyes into what a great level of footy the girls can play at.

“For our game to grow in this region, it is important we support women’s and junior footy.

“Anyone that wants to come and have a go is welcome, bring your runners and footy boots if you’ve got them.”

The wet weather has resulted in a change of venue from No.1 Oval to the Carter St Netball Courts.

Simon Smyth, Regional Manager of AFL in Northern NSW, said plans are in place for a four-team AFL North West Women’s competition.

“Moree, Inverell and New England Nomads in Armidale have been playing unofficial matches in recent years and we only need one more team for a league,” Smyth said.

“We’re hoping Tamworth can get a side together and we can start a competition on the same weekend as the men on April 1.”
