One of Katrina’s songs, When I’m Broken, has been nominated in two categories – country song and unsigned song.
Katrina said she was notified by email on March 17 and was really excited to be nominated.
“To be a finalist for such a huge songwriting competition and in two categories, right as I land in Nashville to pursue chasing publishing, has given me a big opportunity,” she said.
“If I was lucky enough to place or win a section of this competition it has the potential to really open some hard doors to get behind for me in Nashville.”
The musician wrote the song after a conversation with a friend in Nashville back in 2015.
"I was asked if I ever drink wine at home alone [and] I reflected on a challenging time in my life. I had ran home to Gunnedah when I was 23 years old, battling with my own demands and struggling with depression,” she said.
“I would come home from counselling sessions feeling numb and drained to sit in the dark on a bean bag on the lounge room floor with a glass of red wine.
“My response was, “I only drink when I’m broken”. Instantly I said, “Dibs, I’m writing that song”. I wrote it in a blind co-write with writers I’d never met before a few weeks later. There was something magic about this song before we even finished with it.”
The singer-songwriter is currently living and working in Nashville, pursuing a long-awaited dream. She has been getting plenty of gigs and building networks.
“I feel like my writing is evolving. I’m past the hurt of missing home and now I’m full steam ahead.”
When I’m Broken was selected from more than 16,000 entries in the unsigned category. All finalists' songs have been sent to the ISC celebrity judges who will select the winners. Winners will be notified via email and announced in late April or early May.
Voting is open until April 14. To vote, visit http://www.radioairplay.com/voting2017 and select the country category.
