In other matches, Bundarra staved off Bendemeer 34-22 in what was described as an entertaining contest, while Walcha accounted for rivals Uralla 24-18.
Barraba had the bye in the opening round.
The ladies league tag season started with four matches.
Bundarra and Manilla endured tough starts, being held scoreless by Bendemeer (28-0) and Werris Creek (34-0) respectively.
Walcha proved too strong for Uralla, prevailing 18-6 and Dungowan outgunned Boggabri 24-6.
Kootingal and Barraba had byes.
