Police were called to a home in Myndee Ave following reports of a break-in about 6pm.
Officers were told an unknown man entered the home and confronted the resident, a 76-year-old man, with a knife.
The man demanded money, before fleeing the home, police said.
No one was injured during the incident.
Officers from Oxley Local Area Command have examined to scene and have released a description of a man they believe could be able to assist their investigation.
He is described as being of Mediterranean/Middle Eastern appearance, approximately 152cm tall, of medium build with short black hair.
He was last seen wearing a grey shirt with dark coloured shorts.
