The shield, named in honour of the late Steve Pepperell, is back for the first time since 2014 with six Group 4 Second Division clubs taking to the field.
Hosts Kootingal-Moonbi Roosters will feature in the event alongside Boggabri, Manilla, Collegians, Werris Creek and Bendemeer.
With the cancellation of the North Tamworth Nines on Tuesday, the Pepperell Shield holds centre stage on the men’s league scene.
Kootingal-Moonbi Rugby League Club treasurer Kevin Storch said preparations are in place for a successful edition of the pre-season tournament.
“We’re back after a break of a couple of years and the support of the Pepperell Shield has been fantastic,” Storch said.
“We’ve got six sides locked in and looking forward to a big day.
“The teams will play two matches each of 20 minute halves from 9am.
“Then the two top sides will play-off in the final from around 2.30pm.”
The Shield leaves an indelible impact, both on and off the ground.
Not only does it offer clubs a chance to blow out the cobwebs following the off-season, but doubles as a major fundraiser.
Senior Constable Steve Pepperell was a policeman and popular member of the Kootingal community who died in 2007.
His legacy lives on with proceeds during the event named in his honour going to the Cancer Council.
“The object of the day is to recognise the contribution of the late Steve Pepperell and also raise money for the Cancer Council,” Storch said.
“We’ll be holding raffles during the day, while the gate and a percentage of the entry fees will also be donated.
“The gate entry is $5 for adults and pensioners, with kids under-14 free.
“We’re hoping to raise somewhere around $5000.”
The winning club will take home the $900 first-prize cheque and runner-up $400.
The Roosters, under coach Paul Hyson, in his second season at the helm, could prove the team to watch.
