Councillors voted in favour of a strategy to coax towards the habitat on the western side of the Peel River away from the Tamworth CBD after an extensive consultation process.
Council will start developing and installing signage at flying-fox camp areas and a community education campaign to help reduce the fear factor associated with flying-foxes and carry out a survey of householders living adjacent to camps.
“Right now the Peel River camp is fairly inactive, but in the meantime it is important to get a action plan in place to ensure council is able to do what is needed to try and manage flying-foxes to make it easier for residents and the animals to co-exist,” council manager of regulatory services Ross Briggs said.
Cr Glenn Inglis moved an amendment at Tuesday night’s meeting to ensure the state government matches council’s funding implementing the management plan on a one-to-one basis.
