The Newcastle club got home 4-nil in the end, but the Tamworth side held them to 0-all at half-time.
“It was very pleasing for our first run of the season against quality opposition,” North Companions assistant coach Gavin Thompson said.
“Our goal was to stay with them as long as we could.”
They expected to be over-run in the end as fatigue caught up with them.
One of the most pleasing aspects was the way they maintained their structure.
“The players had their individual roles and they stuck to them,” he said.
Having his first run in the black and white, Amine Lihia played well in the midfield, Thompson said.
Jarrod Whitehouse was also excellent in goals after returning to the club, while Tom Gorrie and Zac Kam were very good defensively.
“We’ve got a lot to work on, we’re a work in progress really,” Thompson said.
