The Far Northern Tennis Championships return to the town this weekend for the 70th consecutive year.
The tournament has run for longer than 70 years, but paused during World War II.
Competition secretary Dianne Morris said the event is popular among locals and travellers alike with past participants coming from as far as Newcastle or Brisbane to take part in the multiple divisions.
"We have four different divisions, A, B, C and D with D being the juniors who are 14 and under and the other A, B and C are graded,” she said.
"Within in each one we play singles, doubles and mixed doubles. We have well over $2000 of prizemoney and we have trophies for the D division.
"We get a huge amount of sponsorship from locals, we have over 30 different sponsors locally which is huge.”
She predicted between 80 and 100 competitors will sign up to play this weekend.
"We have a lot of repeat players and that is one of the lovely things about this tournament,” she said.
"We do get repeat coaches, repeat players coming every year.
“It is just fabulous because it is a country tournament.
“There is no pressure in this tournament because we are not a ranking or a points tournament so they can come and play.
“There is no pressure for them to improve their national tennis ranking.”
Play begins from 8am on Saturday and will run through to a finish estimated around 4pm on Sunday.
