At 79, Mr Cannon is the state’s longest-serving firefighter.
It’s a title that could not go to a more deserving man.
Mr Cannon joined the brigade in 1957 and has responded to more than 20,000 call-outs in his career.
It’s an amazing achievement, especially in such a demanding field of work.
Mr Cannon has been privy to things most of us dare not think about.
Fatal accidents, flood emergencies, raging fires.
Being a firefighter carries with it an amazing sense of responsibility.
Some may see it as daunting, but Mr Cannon considers it rewarding.
His passion for the job never seemed to waver either.
Zone Superintendent Tom Cooper told The Leader Mr Cannon was as passionate about firefighting on the day he retired as he was when he first joined as a young teen.
In this day and age, when many of us chop and change careers, 60 years in the same job is nothing but admirable.
Mr Cannon deserves every decorated medal he earned.
Not only was he passionate about his work, but also his community.
From all accounts, he had an amazing work ethic and valued family and friendships above all else.
Tamworth is lucky to lay claim to the state’s longest-serving firefighter.
He has seen so many changes in his line of work over the years – from transport to technology, uniforms to crews.
But it’s why he signed up that kept him there.
“It has all been a bit overwhelming really but it is a real honour to be recognised,” Mr Cannon told The Leader last month.
“It is nice to know that I have helped out a lot of people in that time.
“When that pager goes you are either saving property or saving lives – that’s why we do it.”
Mr Cannon was given a royal farewell in Tamworth on Saturday night – and deservedly so.
The Fire and Rescue NSW Commissioner made the trip to congratulate Mr Cannon, while local MPs Barnaby Joyce and Kevin Anderson also sung his praises.
We congratulate Mr Cannon on his amazing career, and wish him all the best in his new chapter of retirement.
