The Bruce Parker-trained Yes Zariz was the benchmark ratings top rater amongst the 20-strong nominations list with 65 points and garnered the 63.5kg topweight from the handicappers this afternoon.
The Garry Lunn-trained pair Kingtantes (62pts) and Oskastar (60pts) also rated highly and received 60.5kg and 61kg respectively although Oskastar is an unlikely runner after winning at Cessnock on Sunday.
Connie Greig’s Underground Blues (57pts) also comes off successive seconds at Wellington and Bathurst to receive 57.5kg whilst Clint Lundholm’s Farewell Julia (58pts) was a Mudgee B65 winner over 1400m three starts back and will lump 58kg if he runs.
The western interest doesn’t go unnoticed by Tamworth Jockey Club general manager Damon Sullivan and he particularly likes the prospects of handy performer Yes Zariz.
“He’s got good form,” Sullivan said.
“He was second to Lancelot at Mudgee four starts ago over 1405m when he beat Murraguldrie, who won last Friday.
“He looks a good chance on that form as he also mentioned the likes of locally trained Our Masquerade (Craig Martin) 59.5kg, Rockatorio (Sue Grills) 59kg and Slippery Eel (Michelle Fleming) 55kg.
“Slippery Eel wasn’t far off them in the 1200m here the other day and 1400m looks right up his alley. He will be a light weight contender.”
The running rail will be out 3m for Monday’s meeting.
WALCHA Jockey Club committee is gearing up for a huge two-day carnival on February 10-11.
The club is offering a $20,000 bonus ($10,000 to both trainer and $10,000 split between owners) on the February 10 Walcha Cup TAB meeting.
The $20,000 bonus has been sponsored by local business owners Cameron and Dianne Martin and will be named the Martin's Lime and Fertilizer Services Walcha Cup Bonus.
The bonus will be paid out to a trainer (and the respective owners) if they can win the 2017 Walcha Cup and any other two races on the Friday meeting, which have a minimum of nine starters.
The club hopes to attract leading trainers from the country as well provincial and metropolitan areas.
The two-day cup meeting is the largest event for the small community of Walcha each year and boasts large prizemoney with a picnic meeting atmosphere.
The 2017 Elders Walcha Cup ($35,000) is the feature event of the carnival, with the $25,000 Graziers Cup (1000m) and $32,000 Ron Martin Memorial (1000m) the two major support races.
