Fittingly, for the woman who valued a “good country education”, she was also appointed Assistant Minister for Education. On the cusp of taking the reins of her new roles in Cabinet, Ms Mitchell reflected on the significance of the occasion.
“I’m truly humbled and honoured,” she said. “It’s a real privilege.”
She considered her own family the perfect platform to springboard into her twin education portfolios.
“I can bring that perspective,” she said. “It’s a real bonus.”
In her role as NSW Parliamentary Secretary for Regional and Rural Health, Ms Mitchell has been a big supporter of the Push for Palliative campaign. She said there was scope to continue the work in her new position with aboriginal affairs as well.
“Getting out in the community is important to me,” she said.
Although work life will become increasingly busy in the months to come, Ms Mitchell wants keep the end goal in sight.
“My main focus will be my portfolios,” she said. “But I want to be a great representative, not just for Gunnedah, but the whole north west.”
She said Gunnedah was a great place to live and raise a family and felt great camaraderie in Parliament alongside former Gunnedah mayor, Adam Marshall.
