Cyclone Kate secured the feature for McCarthy in last year’s running and he now has a little “pocket rocket” in Rakarazor for Friday night’s $25,000 Final.
Rakarazor, who was making her Aussie debut last Sunday at Tamworth and in doing so won the second heat of the series, will commence from barrier six in the 1980m final.
“I got her off Gareth Dixon in New Zealnd and she only arrived a couple of weeks ago so it was nice to get a winner - she will benefit from that run,” McCarthy said of the Rocknroll Hanover-Rakarach four year old mare.
“I have worked her at home but no trials - she is pretty forward.”
It seems Rakarazor had a strong following across in the land of the long white cloud if press reviews are any guide.
The four-year-old mare has had 29 race starts for four wins and 16 placings.
McCarthy is hoping history repeats after Cyclone Kate set a new track and mares class record in her heat win with a 1.58.0 mile rate.
Rakarazor – also a mare – in her heat run clocked 1.57.5 taking 0.5 seconds off the previous record set by Cyclone Kate.
Real Social from the Stephen Bunz stables had already broken the track record in the first heat last Sunday at Tamworth with 1.57.1 on his run so Rakarazor will hold the mares class record (1.57.5) for the 1980m trip.
Rakarazor had a 14m win over Change The Nation (Nathan Dawson) and Aussie Vista (Lola Weidemann) 6.5 m away third in her heat win.
Sectionals were a first quarter of 30.9 seconds, second quarter 30.6 sec, third quarter 28.4 sec and home in 28.9 sec.
The Pryde’s Easifeed Golden Guitar Final is seen as a launching pad for many a horse as highlighted by Cyclone Kate, who has gone on to win another seven races after her fine triumph in Tamworth 12 months ago.
Besides the Golden Guitar Final, McCarthy will also have a drive behind the Nathan Xuereb trained Sams Cam in the $12,000 Garrard’s Tamworth City Cup and Bettor Be Gold in the $15,000 Starmaker Three Year Old Pace after finishing fifth to Rocknroll Emma (Michael Formosa) in the first heat.
The first of 10 races on the program at Paceway Tamworth tonight is 6pm.
