The Peter Midson-trained black dog was a one length winner over equal-favourite Lektra Falls (Andrew Bell) in a tight finish, with Garry Streatfield’s Flying Sovereign only a head away third.
The honours were shared around with Wybong’s Kevin Smith the only multiple-winning trainer. He bookended the meeting, winning the opening race of the meet – the Allan Syphers Fencing Maiden – with Springtime Boy and then the last - the aptly named Lucky Last Stakes - with Rival Houdini.
Nine of the 10 races went ahead, only the second last race not proceeding because of a mechanical breakdown.
Gunnedah’s William Marmara was among the winners with My Brother Sam taking out the Gunnedah Taxi Stakes (347m).
Following up a second at the previous Saturday’s Gunnedah meeting, the black dog jumped out straight to the front and romped to a 10 length win.
“He just came out of the boxes this week.
“Last week he missed it,” Marmara said.
“I knew if he came out he’d win it.”
It was a tight finish behind him, with Lost Profit (Robert Ryan) pipping Eumerella Magic (Robert Jehu) for second.
Saturday’s win was My Brother Sam’s third from 19 starts. Maramara bred him and had five of his brothers and sisters also racing, but they all finished down in the placings.
He will now look towards the Armidale Cup Carnival, which gets underway next Saturday.
