Now in her forties, Seleen is just now realising her lifelong dream of country music stardom having be named as a finalist for Female Vocalist of the Year at the 2017 Golden Guitar Awards putting a silver lining on what has been a personally difficult year.
Like the title of her second studio album, she is a woman determined to “Follow The Journey”, a title that was changed last minute to reflect the personal journey and obstacles 2016 has been for her
The year projected Seleen into her ‘She’s Getting Stronger’ tour to supporting the Queensland Country Woman’s Association, to a major car collision with a horse on country road outside of Mackay in March (which amazingly Seleen and her band walked away from unscathed) to the most tiring of all her challenges.
Completing her tour, Seleen returned home one night with a sore leg that resulted in her being rushed to hospital.
A misdiagnosis and several tests, Seleen was given the results, bacterial infection in her leg that was rapidly spreading and required immediate surgery.
Stunned, Seleen and her husband Jason were told there was a major possibility that her limb would have to be amputated in addition to the frightening news that there was no guarantee she would survive the emergency surgery.
But Seleen did survive, and continued to thrive… with both legs intact!
Not one to let things get her down or stop her from getting on with life, two weeks after surgery Seleen was up and about on crutches and on a plane with her daughter to the Mildura Country Music Festival to perform for 10 days.
The festival resulted in Seleen being awarded Female Vocalist of the Year at the Southern Star Awards. Returning home as a winner Seleen took a much needed hiatus and some time to reflect on her journey so far. The reality of two near brushes with death resulted in Seleen nurturing herself and continuing her journey more aware than ever of the importance of balancing family life, health and happiness… her success she sees as merely being a bonus.
Come January 2017, Seleen and her husband will take their place on the red carpet in Tamworth at The Golden Guitar Awards alongside industry elite.
“ To be acknowledged by this wonderful industry by my peers is an honour in itself and whatever the outcome I feel like I'm a winner already,” she said.
