It's the must-see place to go if you're on a visit to Tamworth and you haven't been to the Country Music Festival if you've not been photographed with it.

We thought it was worth explaining why the Big Golden Guitar is such an icon for festival goers.

What is the Golden Guitar?

It’s a 12m high statue made of fiberglass over a steel frame. It’s massive and it’s heavy – weighing half a ton.

Why is it so important?

It was unveiled by Slim Dusty, Australia’s King of Country Music, in 1988. It’s a tribute to Tamworth’s country music reputation and Slim was the perfect person to unveil it, having won more Golden Guitars than any other Australian Country Music recording artist.

Where can I find it?

You can’t miss it.

It’s that big guitar on the A15 or Goonoo Goonoo Road. Just outside the Longyard Hotel and next to KFC.

What if I want to take pictures of it?

Go ahead. It’s the favourite pass time around here. And we’ve got a handy guide to help you make the most of your pic.

What else can you do there?

It’s not just the Big Golden Guitar that’s worth a visit. The Big Golden Guitar Tourist Centre is worth a look.

It’s the place to buy Tamworth souvenirs or country music CD’s and there’s a pretty good coffee shop too.

If you find yourself at the icon and happen to take a picture feel free to share it with us on Twitter at @The_NDL or Instagram @theNDL.
