There were certainly some “golden rays” shining down on Hunter Valley trainer and reinsman Mark Callaghan as he enjoyed one of the finest meetings of his career.
With eight races on the program Callaghan had a drive in each race and put together a brilliant display in chalking up four winners – including the winner of The Pub Group Gold Nugget.
It was a career best for the lanky reinsman.
Callaghan kicked off the list of wins behind local pacer The Muse trained by Craig Clegg at Kootingal, and then presented Cessnock trainer Clayton Harmey with a training double when he piloted Riverleigh Dolly and Is That So.
The reinsman’s big moment carrived when he guided Culinary Delight to a sensational win in The Pub Group Gold Nugget.
Callaghan got his ride home by a neck over the much fancied race favourite Captain Rockey.
He was thrilled with his four winners and grateful for the opportunity.
“I have driven three winners a number of times but not four,” said Callaghan.
“It was great to get some local support as well from the Newcastle trainers.
Obviously I love training and driving and to drive four winners is something I am very thankful for.”
Local reinsman Anthony Varga was looking for another win in the Gold Nugget but was more than happy with the performance of his charge Mitrhys Magic who finished seventh.
Varga did have cause to celebrate in the final two races of the night.
He drove a winning double behind Our Bodacious for Hunter Valley trainer Kristine Jackson and Hot Rod Heaven who shone though in the final event paying $16.70 for the win and giving local trainer Ernie Mabbott his first win of the Carnival.
This Sunday, January 22 will see a big afternoon and evening of harness racing at the Tamworth Paceway with 12 races set down.
