AS year 12 graduates received their university offers on Wednesday night – more than two months after their final HSC exams – a Tamworth psychologist has reminded disappointed students there is life after school.

Main-round university offers were released by the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) on 6pm Wednesday, sending local students into mixed emotions.
Some were relieved and excited that their HSC results, released on December 15, will secure them a place in their preferred university courses, while others were disappointed with the outcome.
But New England North West Centacare principal psychologist, Josie Hofman, has reminded those students disheartened by their offers that there are other avenues they can take to pursue their desired career.
“If they are interested in going to Uni, students can be aware that there are alternatives – other options for entry, such as bridging courses and colleges that can provide credit points towards your course,” Mrs Hofman said.
The HSC can be a stressful time for some students, with formal exams running for three weeks from October 13.
She urged students who might notice symptoms such as low mood, lack of motivation or interest in things, increased anxiety to talk to a mental health professional in your area to receive the support you need.
“Life after school is an opportunity to discover yourself, what you love to do and take some time off or holiday,” Mrs Hofman said.
“Some students have reported the value of travelling for up to one year following completing school.
“Engaging in fun and enjoyable activities, such as holidaying or travelling, after the stresses of the HSC can facilitate positive mental health and overall functioning.
“For those attending university, this is a wonderfully different environment to school.
“It is an opportunity to make new friends, celebrate your uniqueness and work towards your future career.”
Mrs Hofman advised there were services available in the region to guide upcoming year 12 students struggling throughout the HSC period.
“Headspace is a key youth agency that targets 12 to 25-year-olds, providing holistic support for students during and at completion of their HSC,” she said.
“A variety of services are available, such as general support, counselling, sexual health nurse, GP, dietitian.”
