Police allege the 35-year-old Currububula man failed to pay for $35 worth of petrol he put in a Holden Commodore at the shop on Goonoo Goonoo Rd about 11.45pm on Monday.
The same car was stopped by Tamworth Target Action Group police on Tuesday morning in Quinn St.
The driver failed a roadside drug swab and investigations revealed the same man was allegedly involved in the theft on Monday night.
He was charged with stealing and breach of bail.
Meanwhile, Oxley police are investigating the theft of hundreds of litres of fuel from Somerton.
More than 300L of fuel was taken from two Tamworth Regional Council graders sometime between January 13 and 15.
